(Bloomberg) — The City of Tshwane, which includes the South African capital Pretoria, and the national government said they’ll put in place remedial measures to improve the quality of drinking water after a cholera outbreak killed 23 people.
Tankers with potable water will deliver water to citizens in Hammanskraal in northern Tshwane until a portable water treatment plant can be installed by March next year, the Department of Water and Sanitation said in a statement on Thursday.
Longer term, the department, the city and the state-owned Development Bank of Southern Africa will work on funding a 4 billion rand ($204 million) upgrade of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment plant, which has been polluting the area’s water supply. Clean water is expected to be available from a permanent facility in June 2026.
