Fifteen cruise missiles and at least 21 Shahed drones were shot down in the Kyiv region, Ukraine’s air defense said on Telegram. Ukraine’s capital has been attacked by Russia from the air on each of the past six nights. No casualties were immediately reported, after at least three people, including a child, were killed in Thursday’s barrage. Drone attacks have been reported across a widening swath of Russia, including the Smolensk region, some 250 km (155 miles) north of the border with Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy held an “informal meeting…within the coalition of fighter jets” while at the European leaders’ summit in neighboring Moldova on Thursday. According to the presidential website, “the leaders discussed practical issues related to the start of training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets and other types of aircraft. The parties agreed to start this process in the near future.”
A split is becoming apparent between Germany and France on prospective membership for Ukraine into NATO. While Paris is pushing for a concrete path, Berlin is urging caution. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban repeated a call for a ceasefire before Ukraine’s expected counteroffensive.
